Latino/a Student Success Institute
March 6, 2008 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Presented by AAHHE and TG in conjunction with the
3nd Annual AAHHE National Conference
March 6-8, 2008
Hyatt Regency Hotel, Miami, Florida

The second Latino/a Student Success Institute is specifically designed for higher education faculty and administrators committed to increasing the recruitment and retention of Latino/a students as well as their persistent success in higher education.

This pre-conference institute will focus on current research, best practices and issues specific to expanding postsecondary education attainment among Hispanics.

AAHHE and TG combine resources to present the Institute
TG is a public, non-profit corporation that administers the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). TG's vision is to be the premier source of information, financing, and assistance to help all families and students realize their educational and career dreams.

The Institute was formed through a mutual desire of AAHHE and TG to address the critical fact that Latinos now constitute roughly 14.5 percent of the nation's population, making them the largest and fastest growing minority in the U.S. At the same time, Hispanic students lag behind Whites and other minorities in college participation and college completion rates.

The Institute's Purpose
The purpose of the Institute is to provide a forum to disseminate the most current information about research and best practices that promote the recruitment, retention and graduation of Latino/a students. Institute objectives include synthesizing the research on what is currently known about Latino/a student success, identifying a research agenda to drive practice and policy, and fostering national models and programmatic initiatives that assist Latino/a students to attain success in higher education.

Institute Highlights
The Institute will concentrate on the topics of Access and Student Success, and Improving Teaching and Learning. Beginning with a continental breakfast (8:00 - 9:00 a.m.) and breaking for lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m., attendees will learn from four experts in education and Hispanic issues: Linda Serra Hagedorn (University of Florida), Aida Hurtado (University of California, Santa Cruz), Barbara Jaffe (El Camino College) and Carlos Silveira (California State University, Long Beach). The Institute will conclude with a discussion of implications and a summary of the research and best practices presented throughout the day.

Institute Registration
Because of the AAHHE and TG partnership, the Institute is free of charge but open only to AAHHE institutional members and invited faculty and administrators in higher education. Invitees should return their registration forms by February 15, 2008.
