Presented by AAHHE and TG in conjunction with the
3nd Annual AAHHE National Conference
March 5-7, 2009
Hyatt Regency Riverwalk Hotel, San Antonio, Texas
The third Latino/a Student Success Institute is specifically designed for higher education faculty and administrators committed to increasing the recruitment and retention of Latino/a students as well as their persistent success in higher education.
This pre-conference institute will focus on current research, best practices and issues specific to expanding postsecondary education attainment among Hispanics.
AAHHE and TG combine resources to present the Institute
TG is a public, non-profit corporation that administers the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). TG's vision is to be the premier source of information, financing, and assistance to help all families and students realize their educational and career dreams.
The Institute was formed through a mutual desire of AAHHE and TG to address the critical fact that Latinos now constitute roughly 14.5 percent of the nation's population, making them the largest and fastest growing minority in the U.S. At the same time, Hispanic students lag behind Whites and other minorities in college participation and college completion rates.
The Institute's Purpose
The purpose of the Institute is to provide a forum to disseminate the most current information about research and best practices that promote the recruitment, retention and graduation of Latino/a students. Institute objectives include synthesizing the research on what is currently known about Latino/a student success, identifying a research agenda to drive practice and policy, and fostering national models and programmatic initiatives that assist Latino/a students to attain success in higher education.
Institute Program
As we experience changing demographics throughout the United States, Latinas/os perhaps face the greatest academic challenges as a result of these sometimes dramatic shifts. The rippling impact of these challenges falls on institutions of higher education.
The Latina/o Student Success Institute is a two-part event that will focus on identifying the challenges that institutions face on Latina/o student outcomes and success, how institutions of higher education have responded and how they can respond in ways that can be measured towards accreditation and accountability. Both morning and afternoon sessions will end with a panelist interactive session on best practices and solutions for institutions to consider.
