President
The NEIU Board of Trustees invites nominations and applications for the position of President of Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Salme Harju Steinberg, who has served the university community since 1975 as professor of History and the past eleven as President, has announced her retirement from the presidency. The position will be available in 2007. Northeastern Illinois University is an urban, public, comprehensive institution located in a residential neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago serving over 12,000 students from Chicago and its suburbs. Satellite campuses are located in two ethnically diverse Chicago neighborhoods as well as a growing joint university center in Lake County. NEIU is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as the most ethnically diverse university in the Midwest. It is also a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution with 25 percent undergraduate Hispanic enrollment. The 67-acre main campus serves commuter students in over 70 undergraduate and graduate programs/majors. The University has a faculty of 680 and a staff of 709 full time employees, civil service and professional. Its FY 2006-2007 budget is $114,000,000.

Job Description: The President reports to the Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor of Illinois and is the Chief Executive Officer of the University, responsible for the oversight of all its interests. The new President will have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in an appropriate discipline, a record of success in a senior-level leadership role in a complex organization and an understanding of teaching, scholarship, research and service in higher education. This person will have a commitment to the University's Mission Statement, which emphasizes access to a quality educational opportunity in a culturally diverse student body offering students global study opportunities. The University is recognized for its historic strengths in teacher education, arts and cultural programming and is committed to its emerging doctoral program in global education.
