I first joined AAHHE in 2012 at the encouragement of my dissertation chair who told me that I needed to "make friends." As a new doctoral student, I was intimidated by academic spaces and was insecure about whether I belonged in higher ed. As I navigated the conference space, I felt 'scholar-struck' as I began meeting those I was citing in my research. I also forged new relationships with fellow graduate students who encouraged me to apply for the Graduate Student Fellows Program. In 2015, I had the opportunity to participate in the program where I gained confidence in myself as an emerging scholar and extended my network of peers. The program provided mentorship and guidance as I prepared applications for tenure-track faculty positions. As I reflect on my career, I find myself grateful for the sense of community, the professional network, and the opportunities to learn more about myself that I found through AAHHE. ~ Marissa
