2022 Call for Nominations
for the
AAHHE Books of the Year Awards

The American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) welcomes nominations for the 2022 AAHHE Books of the Year Awards to recognize and honor the power of the written word that shares the Hispanic experience and celebrates Hispanic culture, history and research excellence. The AAHHE Books of the Year Awards will be presented to Latinx/a/o authors to recognize their contributions to higher education and accomplishments at the highest levels of literature and scholarship. The awards will be presented at the AAHHE National Conference in March 2022.

The 2022 AAHHE Books of the Year Awards Call for Nominations is open in the following categories:

Edited Volumes Award – recognizes an edited volume that makes a contribution to Latinx and Education research and scholarship. The quality of the volume should reflect the highest standards of writing, research and excellence appropriate to the topic(s) addressed. The issues considered should be timely and relevant to Latinx and Education research and scholarship. The volume must have demonstrated evidence that it advances the research field of Latinx and Education. The volume should have been published within two years of the deadline, and may not have been previously submitted for this award.

Senior Scholar Award – recognizes a book by a senior scholar whose career shows a high level of productivity and excellence and whose career has advanced more than 20 years after receiving a doctoral degree. The award goes to a work that speaks to contemporary or historical issues in the field of Latinx and education with relevance beyond our discipline and beyond the academy. The book should have been published within two years of the deadline, and may not have been previously submitted for this award.

Early Career Award – recognizes a book by an early career scholar whose initial career shows promising levels of productivity and excellence. This productivity will also be reflected in the quality and impact of the recipient’s book. The winning candidate should have received a doctoral degree no more than seven years before the deadline. The criteria to be considered by the selection committee are the impact of the candidate’s work, where quality reflects the highest standards of writing, research, and excellence and impact is demonstrated through evidence that the work has advanced the research field of Latinx and education. The book should have been published within two years of the deadline, and may not have been previously submitted for this award.

The competition is open to literary works:  

  • By Latinx/a/o writers and scholars who published a book or collection of essays between 2019 – 2021. 
  • That address the imperatives of advancing the educational equity and the talent of the Latinx population with respect to the population of the United States.
  • With the potential to have a significant impact on improving the higher education status of Latinx.
  • Special consideration will be given to early career writers and scholars.

 

Reprints, translations, or updated editions of previously published books are ineligible. The AAHHE Awards Selection Committee will be responsible to screen submissions for eligibility.

Nomination Process
The call for nominations for the 2022 AAHHE Books of the Year Awards opens on Friday, August 13, 2021. The deadline for submission of nominations via the AAHHE Submission portal is October 1, 2021. An author can be nominated or self-nominated.

How to Apply

  • A nomination form must be completed via the AAHHE Submission portal no later than Friday, October 1, by 11:59 pm ET.
  • After the form has been completed, five printed book copies from the publisher must be sent directly to AAHHE and be received by the end of the day on Friday, October 1, 2021 to be eligible.
  • Please send these 5 copies directly to Dr. Victor Saénz, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy, SZB 348M, 1912 Speedway D5400, Austin, TX 78712-1604.
  • Book copies received without an online completed form will not be considered.

What recognition will be given to the winners?
Award winners will be presented with an AAHHE Award on Friday March 11, 2022 as they are recognized at the Awards ceremony of the 2022 AAHHE National Conference.  Award winners are required to be available either in-person or virtually on March 11, 2022 to receive the award. Awardees unable to attend the awards ceremony will be linked virtually to the conference. If traveling to the 2022 AAHHE National Conference, no compensation will be provided for the registration fee, travel, lodging, etc.

 

Important Dates and Deadlines

August 13, 2021
2022 AAHHE Awards Call for Nominations opens via AAHHE Submission portal.

September 21, 2021
2022 AAHHE Awards Call for Nominations closes. By this date, the nominee’s nomination letter and resume or CV
has been submitted via the AAHHE Submission portal.

Mid-October, 2021
Notifications are sent to award winners.

October 15, 2021
By this date, a 200-word biography (MSWord) and a professional photo (JPEG) has been submitted for the award winner via the AAHHE Submission portal (link will open at a later date).

Feb– Mar, 2022
Announcements will be posted on the AAHHE website and press releases will go out to the AAHHE membership at large.

March 11, 2022
Award winners will be recognized at the awards luncheon at the 2022 AAHHE National Conference.
