Cultivating Justicia con Amor y Querencia: Embracing Healing through Policies and Practices that Transform Institutions for Latinx/a/o Communities

As a preview to the 2022 AAHHE Annual Conference, to be held in Henderson, Nevada, March 10-11, this symposium will discuss the meaning of this annual conference’s theme “Cultivating Justicia con Amor y Querencia: Embracing Healing through Policies and Practices that Transform Institutions for Latinx/a/o Communities”.  This symposium panel, comprised of AAHHE Conference Planning Committee members, will explore why justicia, amor and querencia are necessary aspects to transform institutions of higher education that center healing for Latinx/a/o communities.

Dr. Nancy Acevedo-Gil, California State University, San Bernardino
Nancy Acevedo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, San Bernardino. As an interdisciplinary scholar, she uses critical race theory and Chicana feminist theories to examine transitions along the higher education pipeline for Latina/o/x students. She is a Scholar in Residence at the UC Davis Wheelhouse Center for Community College Leadership and Research and a Research Fellow for the Latinx Research Center at Santa Clara University. Most recently, she co-authored a book with Dr. Gilberto Q. Conchas titled The Chicana/o/x dream: Hope, resistance, and educational success.    
 
 

 


Dr. Hermen Díaz III, SUNY- Buffalo State College
Hermen Díaz III is an Assistant Professor in the Higher Education Administration Department at SUNY-Buffalo State College.  Dr. Díaz brings over a decade of experience as a scholar-practitioner in higher education administration.  Dr. Diaz's research concentrates on the transactional relationship between campus environments and Latino men as it relates to belonging, equity and liberation.  Dr. Díaz received a B.A. in Psychology from Grand Valley State University, a M.S. in Student Personnel Administration from the SUNY Buffalo State College and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Colorado State University.
